This makes me sick. Even if he was guilty 14 is too young to be executed (not that anyone should ever be) but God help us if he was innocent – “we the people” killed an innocent child. That is the question being asked in an article on Huffington Post and by Steve Mckenzie an attorney in South Carolina. The article talks about two girls who were murdered and how a young boy George Junius Stinney joined the search party to look for the girls when they went missing. He told someone he had scene the girls riding their bikes earlier in the day. That got back to the police and he was arrested for murder. At age 14 he was put to death and needed to sit on books on the electric chair to be tall enough for his head to reach. The police say he confessed. This was without his parents present and after they promised him ice cream in exchange. There is no physical evidence. I would venture that it would it would be next to impossible for this skinny little boy to overpower and kill two little girls with a railroad pick. I feel sick. What [...]

This just in from TCADP . . .URGENT! TX Gov. Perry has left Lt. Governor David Dewhurst in charge of today’s execution while he is out of the state. Please CALL DEWHURST RIGHT NOW to ask him to stay the execution of Duane Buck, which is scheduled for 6pm Central time tonight. CALL NOW! 512 463-0001. And from the NCADP . . .Dear Supporters, On May 5, 1997, Mr. Buck was convicted of capital murder in Harris County for the July 1995 shooting deaths of Debra Gardner and Kenneth Butler. A third person, Phyllis Taylor, was also shot, but survived her wound. Ms. Taylor has forgiven Mr. Buck and does not wish to see him executed. During Mr. Buck’s trial, the prosecutor elicited improper testimony from Dr. Walter Quijano that the fact that Mr. Buck was African-American increased the likelihood of his being dangerous in the future. (In Texas, a jury must make a finding of future dangerousness as a prerequisite for a death sentence.) The State urged the jury in its closing argument to rely on Dr. Quijano’s testimony. The jury did so, found that Mr. Buck would be a future danger, and he was sentenced to death. After [...]

This insanity has got to stop! Good for Huffington Post for having the imminent execution of Troy Davis as their headline story. The list of celebrities and politicians calling for a stay is tremendous and extends to former FBI chief William Sessions. People (read anyone in Georgia with the power to stop this execution) need to take their egos out of this. A man’s life or death is not the proper subject over which one engages in a “pissing contest”. Yes, it takes a tremendous human being to step back and look if they have made a mistake and take their ego out of the equation and the world is not filled with a huge number of said humans but this is just insanity to the highest degree. Sorry to be such a misanthrope this morning but seriously what kind of society do we live in that allows innocent people to be executed in the name of “finality” in the law or some other legal fiction. This case has all the classic elements of wrongful conviction, faulty identification procedures, hearsay, jailhouse snitch, the list goes on. Check out the Huffington Post story - this has got to stop!!!

This just in from Amnesty International . . . Further Information on UA 233/11 (28 July, 2011) Issue Date: 1 August 2011 Country: U.S.A. URGENT ACTION EXECUTION STAYED TO REVIEW INNOCENCE CLAIM The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has stayed the execution of Larry Swearingen, who was due to be put to death in Texas on 18 August. He maintains his innocence. Since his trial, a number of forensic experts have ruled him out as the murderer. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (TCCA) granted Larry Swearingen a stay of execution on 28 July. He claims innocence of the murder of Melissa Trotter in 1998, and the stay was granted in response to his appeal to be allowed back into court to argue his claims. His petition was filed on 22 June and supplemented on 11 and 25 July. Melissa Trotter went missing on 8 December 1998. Larry Swearingen, who was seen with her that day, was arrested on 11 December 1998, and has been incarcerated ever since. Melissa Trotter’s body was found by hunters in a forest on 2 January 1999 and Larry Swearingen was charged with her murder. In the absence of a confession or eyewitnesses to the [...]

Mark Stroman is due to be executed in Texas on 20 July. He was sentenced to death in 2002 for the murder of an Indian immigrant following the 9/11 attacks in the USA. A Bangladeshi man he also shot during a series of post-9/11 crimes is calling for clemency. On 4 October 2001, Vasudev Patel, a native of India who had lived near Dallas, Texas, for 10 years, was shot and killed in the petrol station he and his wife operated there. The shooting was captured on surveillance camera, and the following day Mark Anthony Stroman was arrested at his home. The murder was part of a series of violent crimes in the area following 11 September 2001 for which Mark Stroman claimed responsibility. He said he committed them in retaliation for the 9/11 attacks, against people he considered of Middle Eastern descent. At his trial for the murder of Vasudev Patel, the state also introduced evidence that on 15 September 2001 Mark Stroman had shot and killed a Pakistani immigrant, Waqar Hasan, at his grocery shop, and on 21 September 2001 had shot Rais Bhuiyan, an immigrant from Bangladesh in the service station where he was working. Rais Bhuiyan [...]

I recently had the experience of getting to know a Death Row inmate who was facing an imminent execution date. Lee “Tiny” Taylor and I began writing a couple of months ago, not long after he was informed of the exact day, time, and manner in which he would be put to death by our state. I can not imagine how it must feel to receive such news, but Tiny seemed to take it in stride. In fact, much to my surprise, I found his letters to be cheerful and upbeat. It appeared to me that Tiny had somehow managed to make peace with his fate. Sure, he had concerns, but from what I could gather in our short time of correspondence, they were mostly reserved for his family and friends. I quickly grew to admire Tiny’s strength and the calmness of spirit he displayed under these most oppressive and dire circumstances. I am not sure that I would be so brave if I were to find myself in his shoes. In an effort to show my support for this young man who I only got to know briefly but whose spirit I will not soon forget, I stood outside [...]
