s-MICHAEL-ANTHONY-GREEN-large-1Check out this huff post article ( I know I am sure I could have found a more local source) for the news on the release yesterday of Texas man Michael Anthony Green of Houston who spent 27 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Greene is now 44 years old. That means he was barely 18 when he was falsely convicted of rape and sentence to 75 years in prison. Wrongful conviction is horrible at any age but somehow I find it more shocking when it happens to a practically a child. Our system is seriously flawed. Green is blessed that there was still DNA evidence in his case to test and that it was properly labeled as Harris county has been a mess in terms of evidence preservation! Green was released on a $500 bond while the Texas Court Of Criminal Appeals reviews his case, which seems like a technicality since DA in Harris is in agreement that 27 years ago they got the wrong guy. Faulty police line ups were part of the problem. Another outrageous aspect of the case is that from the DNA and or subsequent investigation the DA feels they know who the 4 men were who were involved in kidnapping and raping the victim but they can not try the men as the statute of limitations has passed. That makes me crazy- perhaps someone should try to change that. Why do we have a statute of limitations on rape to begin with, especially in light of all the wrongful convictions and the new DNA technology that can lead to the real criminal in cases past. Welcome home Mr. Green and God Bless!!!
