Go Barry Scheck! Check out this article on Huffington Post about Berry Gibbs who was framed by a New York cop who was a killer for the mob. This is the largest settlement in the city’s history. I am struck by the profound thankfulness for life exhibited by Gibbs and the other exonerees I have encountered. I try to think of their struggle when I feel like complaining about my own life in any way. Especially when my complaint turns to my most often complained “there is not enough time in the day, I wish I had 5 parallel lifetimes to accomplish everything I would like to do” and then I think about someone having 20 or more years of their life taken away and how thankful they are for any time in the free world. Truly humbling. I am trying to learn. Great victory for Gibbs and in a way for us all. Now if we could just get congress to pass HR 4743 making compensation to exonerees exempt from federal taxes Gibbs could actually see all $10 million.
