frenchposterTuesday May 19, 2009 is Global Day of Action for Troy Davis. Troy’s lawyers will be filing a writ of habeas corpus to the supreme court on tuesday. To learn more about his case and for a link to the Amnesty International online petition visit his website. Another great resource is this article. There is a protest scheduled for the capital steps in Georgia on Tuesday from 6-8 pm. I suggest that what we can do in Texas is pray for Troy Davis during that time. Pray to whatever God you believe in and if you do not believe in God please just send positive thoughts Troy’s way! When enough people join together change can happen and Troy needs our help even though he is not in Texas. Knowingly executing an innocent person has happened in the history of our country but this is happening now. I would hope that we as a nation are even more evolved than to knowingly condone our country murdering an innocent man while the true perpetrater is likely still free and committing other crimes. Troy was convicted of killing a police officer in Georgia in the parking lot of a fast food chain. There were multiple eye witnesses that have mostly since recanted and a couple who have alterier motives for not doing so. I think that a jury and maybe the police themselves feel that having multiple witnesses is somehow fool proof identification but there are so many ways that that can end up not being the case. It can depend on how testimony was collected, do the witness know each other, could they have talked to one another in between their identifications, do they have a motive for lying, is it scientifically possible to see what they think they saw, etc. The play The Crucible based on the Salem witch trials comes to mind showing a clear example of mob mentality and false eye identifications.  My only point is please pray for Troy Davis and tell your friends and family and your synagogue, church, mosque, temple, other to please do the same.
